In a few recent I/P (Israel/Palestine) diaries, this subject has popped up: what is the Democratic Party's stance on Israel and Palestine?
The 2008 Democratic Party platform, "Renewing America's Promise," is available at the Democratic National Committee's website. This is the platform that won us a big margin in the House, very nearly a filibuster-proof Senate, and helped put Obama in the White House.
I quote the full text of the sections on Israel below, with some comments.
Of course, like any party platform, this isn't some catechism we as Democrats (those of us who are Democrats, that is) are sworn to follow to the last semi-colon. There are posters here who will disagree strenuously with parts of it. I'm not posting this as a way of calling them out as heretics. The platform is, however, by definition a very strong indication of what the central consensus within the Democratic party is.
So let's take a look at what it has to say about Israel and Palestine and find out what that central consensus is.
